The MUBASA Sports Festival, held on January 11, 2025, at the Makerere University Business School (MUBS) grounds, was a remarkable success, drawing participants from various MUBS campuses and faculties across Uganda. The event, officiated by MUBS Principal, Professor Moses Muhwezi, brought together over 1,000 attendees, including students, staff, and the general public. It served as a dynamic platform for sportsmanship and sustainability, with clean cooking technologies taking center stage.

The Renewable Energy Platform (NREP) and the Uganda National Alliance on Clean Cooking (UNACC), in partnership with UKAID, Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Makerere University Business School (MUBS), and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), utilized the event to showcase the latest innovations in clean cooking.

Throughout the day, the clean cooking exhibition attracted considerable attention from participants. Attendees visited the various stalls, eager to explore the latest trends in clean cooking technologies. Many took the opportunity to ask questions, gather information, and learn about the benefits of adopting these solutions. The engagement between exhibitors and participants was highly interactive, with visitors discovering technologies such as Electric Pressure Cookers (EPCs), improved cookstoves, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and alternative fuels like briquettes and ethanol.

For some participants, the event was more than just an opportunity to learn — it became a chance to take action. Several attendees purchased clean cooking technologies on-site, marking a tangible step toward embracing sustainable living. This immediate adoption highlighted the effectiveness of on-the-ground awareness campaigns and direct engagement in driving behavioral change.

The exhibitors also found the event invaluable. The festival provided them with a platform to connect with a diverse audience, from students interested in sustainable solutions to faculty members and the general public seeking practical ways to improve their cooking practices. It was a golden opportunity to showcase their innovations, gain feedback, and build relationships with potential users and stakeholders.

Professor Moses Muhwezi, accompanied by Dr. Nicholas Mukisa of NREP, inspected the stalls during the event. As they toured the exhibition, Professor Muhwezi shared valuable insights and interacted with the exhibitors, gaining knowledge about the various technologies on display. This engagement highlighted the event’s significance, not just as a showcase, but as an educational exchange.

To mark the occasion, Dr. Nicholas Mukisa and his team from NREP presented Professor Muhwezi with an electric pressure cooker as a symbol of their shared commitment to promoting clean cooking solutions. This gesture emphasized the role of leaders like Professor Muhwezi in becoming ambassadors for clean cooking solutions.

When influential individuals embrace sustainable solutions, they help to amplify the message and inspire others to follow suit.

Overall, the MUBASA Sports Festival was a resounding success. It not only celebrated sportsmanship and unity but also provided a platform to promote clean cooking technologies that are vital for Uganda’s sustainable future. The event reinforced the need for continued efforts to educate the public, support innovation, and encourage the adoption of cleaner, healthier, and more efficient cooking solutions. As participants left the grounds with new knowledge and, for some, new cooking technologies, the impact of the festival extended far beyond the day itself, contributing to a larger movement for sustainability and climate action in Uganda.
